Practical information - Before arrival to Portugal

Visa and other permits

All students that are not European Union nationals must obtain a study visa from the Portuguese Consulate located in their country of residence, prior to their arrival.

The issuing of the study visa is dependent on the acceptance letter sent by the Faculty or Institute of UL which will receive the student. The study visa is only valid for the expected duration of the period of studies.

It is suggested that the request for a study visa at the Portuguese Consulate is made with at least two months in advance, before the date of arrival to Lisbon.

It is suggested that students may be accompanied by an entry record (Entry Declaration), until three days after their arrival in Portugal.

Accomodation

Due to an insufficient number of accommodation places at the UL student halls, all foreign students coming to study at UL, should consider the option of finding private accommodation before arriving to Lisbon. In the case of non-European Union students, finding accommodation prior to arrival is compulsory for visa purposes.
